Abstract

This chapter proposes semiparametric estimation of the relationship between growth rate of GDP per capita, growth rates of physical and human capital, labor as well as other covariates and common trends for a panel of 23 OECD countries observed over the period 1971–2015. The observed differentiated behaviors by country reveal strong heterogeneity. This is the motivation behind using a mixed fixed- and random coefficients model to estimate this relationship. In particular, this chapter uses a semiparametric specification with random intercepts and slopes coefficients. Motivated by Lee and Wand (2016), the authors estimate a mean field variational Bayes semiparametric model with random coefficients for this panel of countries. Results reveal nonparametric specifications for the common trends. The use of this flexible methodology may enrich the empirical growth literature underlining a large diversity of responses across variables and countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aim to find optimal cluster head and minimize energy wastage in WSNs. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have low power sensor nodes that quickly lose energy. Energy efficiency is most important factor in WSNs, as they incorporate limited sized batteries that would not be recharged or replaced. The energy possessed by the sensor nodes must be optimally used so as to increase the lifespan. The research is proposing hybrid artificial bee colony and glowworm swarm optimization [Hybrid artificial bee colony and glowworm swarm optimization (HABC-GSO)] algorithm to select the cluster heads. Previous research has considered fitness-based glowworm swarm with Fruitfly (FGF) algorithm, but existing research was limited to maximizing network lifetime and energy efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed HABC-GSO algorithm selects global optima and improves convergence ratio. It also performs optimal cluster head selection by balancing between exploitation and exploration phases. The simulation is performed in MATLAB.

Findings

The HABC-GSO performance is evaluated with existing algorithms such as particle swarm optimization, GSO, Cuckoo Search, Group Search Ant Lion with Levy Flight, Fruitfly Optimization algorithm and grasshopper optimization algorithm, a new FGF in the terms of alive nodes, normalized energy, cluster head distance and delay.

Originality/value

This research work is original.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a porous medium model for forced air convection in pin/plate‐fin heat sinks subjected to non‐uniform heating of a hot gas impinging jet. Parametric studies are performed to provide comparisons between inline square pin‐fin and plate‐fin heat sinks in terms of overall and local thermal performance for a fixed pressure drop.

Design/methodology/approach

Heat conduction in substrates is coupled with forced convection in the pin/plate‐fin flow channel. The forced convection is considered by employing the non‐Darcy model for fluid flow and the thermal non‐equilibrium model for heat transfer. A series of experiments is performed to validate the model for both the pin‐fin and plate‐fin heat sinks.

Findings

The present porous medium model is capable of capturing the presence of lateral heat spreading in the plate‐fins and the absence of lateral heat spreading in the pin‐fins under non‐uniform thermal boundary condition, attributing to the adoption of the orthotropic effective thermal conductivity for the solid phase in the energy equation. The present results show that the inline square pin‐fin heat sink has topological advantage over the plate‐fin heat sink, although the heat spreading through the plate‐fins on reducing the peak temperature on the substrate is pronounced.

Originality/value

This paper reports an original research on theoretical modeling of forced convection in pin/plate‐fin heat sinks subjected to the non‐uniform heating of an impinging jet.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to address the following two research questions. RQ1: What are the influential user archetypes in the social question-answering (SQA) community? RQ2: To what extent does user feedback affect influential users in changing from one archetype to another?

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a sample of 13,840 influential users drawn from the Covid-19 community on Zhihu, the archetypes of influential users were derived from their ongoing participation behavior in the community using the Gaussian mixture model. Additionally, user feedback characteristics such as relevance and volume from 222,965 commenters who contributed 546,344 comments were analyzed using the multinomial logistic regression model to investigate the archetype change of influential users.

Findings

Findings suggest that influential users could be clustered into three distinctive archetypes: touch-and-go influential users, proactive influential users and super influential users. Moreover, feedback variables have various impacts on the influential user archetype change, including a shift toward creating higher-quality content and fostering increased interaction, a shift toward generating lower-quality content and decreased interaction but improved speed and having mixed effects due to differences in information processing among these archetypes.

Originality/value

This study expands the existing knowledge of influential users and proposes practical approaches to cultivate them further.

Abstract

Purpose

Sufficient sample data are the necessary condition to ensure high reliability; however, there are relatively poor fatigue test data in the engineering, which affects fatigue life's prediction accuracy. Based on this, this research intends to analyze the fatigue data with small sample characteristics, and then realize the life assessment under different stress levels.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the Bootstrap method and the principle of fatigue life percentile consistency are used to realize sample aggregation and information fusion. Secondly, the classical outlier detection algorithm (DBSCAN) is used to check the sample data. Then, based on the stress field intensity method, the influence of the non-uniform stress field near the notch root on the fatigue life is analyzed, and the calculation methods of the fatigue damage zone radius and the weighting function are revised. Finally, combined with Weibull distribution, a framework for assessing multiaxial low-cycle fatigue life has been developed.

Findings

The experimental data of Q355(D) material verified the model and compared it with the Yao’s stress field intensity method. The results show that the predictions of the model put forward in this research are all located within the double dispersion zone, with better prediction accuracies than the Yao’s stress field intensity method.

Originality/value

Aiming at the fatigue test data with small sample characteristics, this research has presented a new method of notch fatigue analysis based on the stress field intensity method, which is combined with the Weibull distribution to construct a low-cycle fatigue life analysis framework, to promote the development of multiaxial fatigue from experimental studies to practical engineering applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose general parallelism techniques for holistic twig join algorithms to process queries against Extensible Markup Language (XML) databases on a multi‐core system.

Design/methodology/approach

The parallelism techniques comprised data and task parallelism. As for data parallelism, the paper adopted the stream‐based partitioning for XML to partition XML data as the basis of parallelism on multiple CPU cores. The XML data partitioning was performed in two levels. The first level was to create buckets for creating data independence and balancing loads among CPU cores; each bucket was assigned onto a CPU core. Within each bucket, the second level of XML data partitioning was performed to create finer partitions for providing finer parallelism. Each CPU core performed the holistic twig join algorithm on each finer partition of its own in parallel with other CPU cores. In task parallelism, the holistic twig join algorithm was decomposed into two main tasks, which were pipelined to create parallelism. The first task adopted the data parallelism technique and their outputs were transferred to the second task periodically. Since data transfers incurred overheads, the size of each data transfer needed to be estimated cautiously for achieving optimal performance.

Findings

The data and task parallelism techniques contribute to good performance especially for queries having complex structures and/or higher values of query selectivity. The performance of data parallelism can be further improved by task parallelism. Significant performance improvement is attained by queries having higher selectivity because more outputs computed by the second task is performed in parallel with the first task.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed parallelism techniques primarily deals with executing a single long‐running query for intra‐query parallelism, partitioning XML data on‐the‐fly, and allocating partitions on CPU cores statically. During the parallel execution, presumably there are no such dynamic XML data updates.

Practical implications

The effectiveness of the proposed parallel holistic twig joins relies fundamentally on some system parameter values that can be obtained from a benchmark of the system platform.

Originality/value

The paper proposes novel techniques to increase parallelism by combining techniques of data and task parallelism for achieving high performance. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first paper of parallelizing the holistic twig join algorithms on a multi‐core system.
